Ishmael Khaldi, Former Deputy Consul General at the Israeli Consulate in San Francisco, spoke at Bowman Hall on Tuesday, Oct. 25. Khaldi wrote "A Shepherd's Journey", his autobiography about becoming Israel's first Bedouin diplomat. Photo by Anthony Vence.

Former Israeli diplomat Ishmael Khaldi’s lecture was going smoothly until an altercation with a Kent State professor threatened to derail Tuesday night’s event.

After the speech at Bowman Hall ended, Khaldi opened the floor to a Q-and-A session. The first person to ask a question was history professor Julio Pino.

Standing at the back of the auditorium, Pino asked Khaldi how he and his government could justify providing aid to countries like Turkey with blood money that came from the deaths of Palestinian children and babies.

Julio Pino.

This is not Pino’s first brush with controversy. In 2002 he wrote an opinion column for the Daily Kent Stater praising a suicide bomber. In 2007 he made national headlines when The Drudge Report featured a story accusing him of contributing to a blog called Global War, which refers to itself as a “jihadist news service.”

The crowd fell into an awkward silence as the two continued to exchange words from across the auditorium.

“It is not respectful to me here,” Khaldi said.

Pino responded by saying “your government killed people” and claimed Khaldi was not being respectful to him.

“I do respect you, but you are wrong,” Khaldi said. “It’s a lie.”

The exchange ended as Pino stormed out of the auditorium shouting “Death to Israel!”

One person in the crowd retaliated by shouting “Shame on you!”

Khaldi came to Kent State to talk about his journey from a Muslim Bedouin minority living in a tent to a respected diplomat in the Israeli Foreign Ministry.

Khaldi discussed the current state of the Middle East and the many misconceptions he said American citizens have concerning Israel and its people. He made special mention of Israel’s attempts to provide aid to Turkey, which was recently devastated by an earthquake.

#KWKhaldi

“We see a country in need and we stand up to help,” Khaldi said.

After the altercation with Pino, Khaldi moved on to more questions, but he still referred back to his thoughts on the heckler.

“Let’s respect each other; it starts from there,” Khaldi said. “By the way, this is not respect.”

Khaldi said he thinks people misunderstand what’s happening with Israel, and it may explain some of Pino’s comments.

“Is this what that professor is telling you?” Khaldi said. “It is my responsibility to tell you the truth and build relationships.”

After the speech ended, the remaining students in the auditorium could be heard admonishing the professor’s behavior.

One student in attendance said, “I get it’s freedom of speech and all that, but that guy just makes us [the university] look bad.”

Had this guy his first semester at KSU...
written by John, November 03, 2011
Prof. Pino's first semester was the fall of 1992. I, a freshman journalism major had no idea what I was getting into when I walked into (likely the same) Bowman Hall lecture for his "Civ I" class.
I thought he was just "quirky" the way he'd give a good chunk of his lecture to the stage floor, or to the walls around us. I figured he "must've been really smart" when he would stop mid-sentence to giggle at some thought he'd have that he didn't share.
Looking back, his required reading of the Upanishads wasn't right for a history class. Despite it illustrating the history of ancient India, I think he could've came up with something better. Of course, when his exams were heavily into the interpretation of a religious text, many in the class were reserved. Of course, it never dawned on him that all the times he said "You'll be seeing this when you're seniors" like he assumed we were all history majors, it really frosted us. Some seniors knocking it off as a final LER were spending more time on that then classes in their major!
Simply put, I hope that illustrates that Prof. Pino has a history of living in his own version of reality that's not afraid to be disconnected. While the open mind might call it "bold" and "intellectually exploratory," I would seriously question if he is qualified to give a basic, objective overview that allows students to make up their own minds - a true mark of an educated mind.

It is called political Islam. Professor Pino was honest enough to say what you will find all over Islamic websites.
written by Marc to Please Don't, October 29, 2011
Pino showed his true face. It is the Islamic clerics and academics that perpetuate this religious obligation: "Believers! Make war on the infidels who dwell around you. Let them find harshness in you." Hamas: No Muslim shall rest until the banner of Islam flies over every inch of the land.(that is also a form of education) There are currently 28 conflicts and border wars around the world today involving repressive Islamic regimes. Muslims, Muslim leaders, and Muslim press rarely blame Muslims for what Muslims do. No one is more critical of American politics than Americans. Attempt to find an Islamist who is critical of political Islam, its methods, Sharia law. Jews believe that all righteous men will enter the Kingdom of heaven. Many Christians teach that if you do not accept Jesus, you will not get into heaven. Muslims teach that if you do not accept Islam you are not getting in. This is also education.

This is exactly the kind of hateful talk that isn't needed. You know that there are millions of peace-loving Muslims in this world - just look at Ishmael Khaldi. Read between the lines and don't contribute to the violent rhetoric like Professor Pino. It's the last thing that's going to help this situation.
Pino doesn't want us dead because of his religion; he wants us dead because he has a fanatical interpretation of his religion and associates himself with people who are like-minded. The politically correct want anybody but him teaching our kids...it would be hypocritical to support open-mindedness and then support Pino, and you know it. But I'm sure you're looking for any excuse to turn this into a political issue and bash the American left and center. Because you also know that this has absolutely nothing to do with the President of the United States. Pino was spewing his bullshit well before President Obama took office (in fact, his major tirades started in the Bush administration), and this is once again, not at all a political issue. The fact of the matter is that Pino is just straight crazy.

He simply could not control his Mosque made seething hate for the west, and Israel. The politically correct want him teaching our kids, as he is the most destructive influence they could find.

Who can be surprised? How can you fire someone who based on his "religion" who simply wants you all dead? Not the left, or politically correct.

One day he will act out this hate, and when he does, like the FT hood jihadist did, no one will be allowed to speak out, or to have have any idea why. Islam works to silence us. Watch Erik Holder try to cut ant terrorist funding.

We desperately need a new president! Dept of Jihad chief. Homeland security chief.

The question asked was, "Can Pino be fired for his actions?"

Here is the response:

"In my opinion, as a Professor, and as a student of the law and Constitution, I would have to say,"yes", even without seeing his contract. Explanation follows next paragraph.

This case of the Cuban is strikingly similar to the Irvine case, which ended in guilty verdicts for all but one (I believe) of the defendants.

From my experience, most employment contracts in the education business demand adherence to a Code of Ethics, to which the newly - contracted employee stipulates.

Had I engaged in behavior even remotely like Pino's I would have been 86d, probably by the end of classes that day."

The question of Statehood was resolved in 1947
written by Marc to Julio Pino, October 28, 2011
Did anyone ever tell you that the question of Statehood was resolved with the 1947 U.N. partition plan (a Jewish State and an Arab State living side by side) (the partition plan never mentions Palestinians. However, six Arab armies invaded the newly formed Jewish State, in an ultimately unsuccessful attempt to destroy it. It is ironic that Palestinian Arabs, seek statehood now via a path they have rejected for Israel all these years.

The Koran and Israel's Birth Certificate
written by Balance to Radicalism, October 28, 2011
The Koran recognizes the Land of Israel as the heritage of the Jews and it explains that, before the Last Judgment, Jews will return to dwell there. This prophecy has already been fulfilled. Prophecy or Fantasy, all three religions have it in their collective books, and it has been a reality in your life time. Israel's international "birth certificate" was validated by all three ancient Biblical texts; Jewish settlement from the time of Joshua onward; the Balfour Declaration of 1917; the League of Nations Mandate, which incorporated the Balfour Declaration; the United Nations partition resolution of 1947; Israel's admission to the UN in 1949; the recognition of Israel by most other states; and, most of all, the society created by Israel's people in decades of thriving, dynamic national existence.

UN Rules of War.
written by Balance, October 28, 2011
Under the UN Rules of War: "Anyone" who "specifically" targets non-combatants and civilian populations are no longer subject to protection under these Rules. That goes for Mladic, Hamas, Hezbollah or anyone else whose ambitions are to target civilian populations. This is why Israel can ignore peaceful UN Resolutions when its civilians are being specifically targeted for attacked. Every rocket fired into Israel is an Act of War, and every Palestinian knows there will be a known response.

written by C'mon Now, October 28, 2011
Yes, you are indeed still spewing bullshit. And I might just have to add overreaching generalizations to that list, as well: "Israelis are the true jihadists. Israelis are the true extremists." Talk like that is destructive and unreasonable, and I hope you know it. I think the whole point that "Real Truth" is trying to make here is that people need to do their research, not generalize entire populations, and not compartmentalize this conflict into black and white rhetoric. Don't pretend to know about the Mossad from wikipedia and some news articles - we'll never know the whole truth just as we'll never know the whole truth about the CIA or the KGB. The point is that both sides need to take blame and both sides need to take responsibility for their actions, but blaming violence solely on the Israelis and furthermore calling them terrorists and war criminals is destructive, and more to the point, completely erroneous. History has taught us that this kind of thinking is quite possibly the most harmful.

The San Remo Manual on International Law - #67 Merchant vessels flying the flag of neutral States may not be attacked unless they: (a) are believed on reasonable grounds to be carrying contraband OR breaching a blockade, and after prior warning they intentionally and clearly refuse to stop, or intentionally and clearly resist visit, search or capture.

Professor Pino is quite ignorant of facts about Israel entirely but quite prepared to repeat anti-semitic and anti-Israel comments it would appear. Are teaching faculty not required to do any research? I don't think free speech extends to teaching false hoods, screaming death threats, and shaming a university which is all that he achieved. the UN Report found Israel had the right to defend its territory and board the Turkish ship which was also proven not to be full of humanitarian supplies but arms and some of the people on board to be Islamists who were committed to Jihad and martyrdom. Does Pino read nothing but his own propaganda? Israel has lent its expertise on the ground in Sri Lanka after the tsunami,in Haiti after the earthquake, in Japan after the tsunami, and even in St. Louis after Katrina. "From whence cometh my help?" is answered frequently--from Israel and of course they would be first to offer to help Turkey. Israel is a multi-racial country, gay friendly, and democractic with democratic institutions. Students are entitled to learn the truth and not the lies and rant of Pino.

written by The Real Truth, October 27, 2011
Hey, remember when you can't get your damn facts straight? Read the Palmer Report that was commissioned by the UN that found the flotilla to be a dangerous and reckless act which needlessly escalated conflict. The same report that also found the IHH and other organizers of the flotilla had planned violent resistance against soldiers including the use of guns, knives, deck chairs, and iron pipes. The report also happened to find Israel's naval blockade of Gaza to be legal under international law. Take a look at the other five ships in the flotilla and what happened to them. They were boarded and the captains and crews spoke with the soldiers to agree to be towed into Israel. Their cargo was unloaded, searched for weapons, and then transferred via land crossing into the Gaza Strip. The exchange was peaceful, and not one person was hurt. On the other hand, those "civilians" on the Mavi Marmara were of one nationality: Turkish; and if you honestly think that they were unarmed we might have a bigger problem on our hands than a professor who can't keep his violent fantasies to himself. Read a book and do your research before you start posting stupid shit on news sites. People like you are almost as dangerous as Pino...spreading your ignorance and purporting to know what you most definitely don't.

You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country can't just be a flag; the symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. Irvine 11
written by Arafat, October 27, 2011
Last year at UC/Irvine eleven members of the Muslim Student Association took it upon themselves to aggressively and relentlessly interrupt Ambassador Oren's speech at that university. The student's actions were so egregious that legal action was taken against them and they were found guilty of several charges.

What Professor Pino did is not dissimilar to what the Irvine 11 were found guilty of, but in his instance it is arguably even more egregious, for he is an adult AND a tenured professor and should know the rules governing civil discourse.

The administration needs to take legal action against this loose cannon before things get worse. By doing so they will both be doing the right thing while also protecting Kent against legal actions taken against the institution. By not doing anything the administration is simply hiding their head in the sand while allowing professors to break standard codes of conduct without so much as a second glance. By doing nothing they are opening Pandora's Box.

The administration needs to act and act fast. This man cannot be allowed to continue his tenure at Kent. He is an embarrassment to hemself (which no one should care about short of his family), but more importantly he is a blemish and embarrassment to Kent. If the amdinistration ignores this incident then it is they who are ultimately culpable for this man's unbridled predjudice and hatred.

I was personally at the event last night and took what was said and all the actions to heart, by both sides. As a Jewish student on campus, I have seen my share of hate crimes and slander from students, but this was my first experience where a leader, and someone of major influence, such as a tenured professor, has made his opinion so well known and spoken about. Please don't get me wrong, everyone, even Professor Pino, has a right to have an opinion, but the way this was brought about was completely disrespectful and uncalled for from anyone, especially someone in his position. I have read all of the posts previous to this one, and I most agree with the one posted by Jennifer. She has made the very important point that this should not be about the uncalled for actions by one person, but the fact that we should be focused on fixing that so that we do not have to see things like this again. We should most focus on bringing together Jews and Muslims and as Khaldi said "We have so much in common..." One of my close friends is a Muslim and we constantly talk about how to join our two religions and show people a peaceful way to settle issues. If we take away one thing from what has happened, it should be that hate speech and negative connotations only receive negativity in return. We need to find a way to positively talk and express ourselves to create peace. If Pino said said something along the lines of "I do not agree with what you are saying and this is what I feel..." none of this would have happened, and they could have had a peaceful conversation.

It's unfortunate that today the we're talking about the actions of one irrational person which took less that one minute- rather than the message of Ishmael Khaldi- that you can rise above your conditions, that he, a boy growing up in a tent, became an international diplomat, that Israel, which it has its faults gives opportunities to minorities regardless their culture, religion, gender or sexual orientation. I'm saddened that the article and photos gave equal- and some might say preferential treatment to the one person who sought to derail the event. We should be talking about the student who asked 'how can I, as a Muslim, help to build bridges with my Jewish friends?' The issues in the Middle East are always derailed when we spend our time focusing on the extremists and not the many moderate voices looking for solutions in a civil manner.

Pino asked Khaldi how he and his government could justify providing aid to countries like Turkey with blood money that came from the deaths of Palestinian children and babies.
written by Mark, October 26, 2011
Pino asked Khaldi how he and his government could justify providing aid to countries like Turkey with blood money that came from the deaths of Palestinian children and babies.

How did Khaldi answer the question? If Khaldi admitted to Pino's assertion and Pino continued the attack that would be one thing.

However I suspect Khaldi smarmed his way out of answering the question. That would irritate me too.

There are several things in this article Khaldi is quoted as saying:

“It is my responsibility to tell you the truth and build relationships.” Thats the 'No one in this room knows the truth but me' thing, an appeal to ignorance(?). It should be noted there's you're truth, you're Governments truth, and neither necessarily have anything to do with the *factual* truth.

It may be the quality of the KSU Stator reporting: Pino ... said “your government killed people” ... , Khaldi said. “It’s a lie.”

No, not really. We readers don't know which particular incident Pino was referring to, off the top of my head I remember Israeli helicopters sending missiles into a bazaar in an attempt to take out a Palestinian leader. Those missiles missed the leader but killed over a score of people just going on with their lives.

“It is not respectful to me here,” Khaldi said.

I get the impression Khaldi is the first to broach the 'respect' issue. This comes under the 'Making an issue of that which you're the instigator, or at least the most guilty'. Unless Khaldi answered the question honestly Khaldi was showing disrespect for Pino's and the audiences intelligence and counting on the audiences ignorance.

I'm wondering, did Khaldi think he could tour major American universities complete with history and world affairs departments and *not* be asked uncomfortable questions? That it would all be chocolate and roses?

//

Pino's behavior isn't the most disgusting or inappropriate I have seen from professors and administrations at KSU. Far from it.

It's that those officials have learned to carry on behind closed doors with the only witnesses being their cohorts.

//

In closing, I can't condone or condemn Pino's behavior. I just need to imagine what it would be like to be in the room with a diplomat from Saudi Arabia and hear the diplomat deny it was Saudis in the planes on 911. Think that diplomat would have a hard time escaping the room unscathed?

In the least this incident should prompt students to look into the Israeli-Arab issue. Stay away from Fox and MSNBC, read real materials. OTOH stay away from the subject if learning about the U.S. and it's citizenry's complicity in the situation will make you uncomfortable.

You may need you're illusions.

This is absolutely disgusting. There is no way this man should be employed by the university for one second longer. I thought it was ridiculous that they kept him on after it came to light that he was posting on a jihadist blog, but this is 1,000 times worse. He called for the extermination of an entire country during a university-sanctioned speech on campus. He is an embarrassment to the university, and his views have no place there.

Imagine if a non-Muslim had shouted, "Death to Iran" during a speech at the university. He would have been fired faster than Lefton could make excuses for him. This is hateful speech that calls for violence. Kent State needs to take immediate action and make it clear that this kind of speech from a professor is simply not acceptable.

He must be tenure. That is the only way he can still be here.

In the 90's I had one of Pino's history classes and I felt like he was one of the best in that dept. It is sad to see how radical he has become. He has even radically changed his look. Another example of what can happen when someone goes too far and radicalizes their beliefs. A sad representation for all the good that KSU tries to put forth. They have done much to make a statement with all the building and remodeling. Not to mention all the excellent commercials they are running with previous and famous grads.

He went about it in the wrong way, but he was still wrong. Israel has always held a strong stance of aiding civilians in times of need, but holding firm against oppressive politicians and governments. Look back at every major conflict and every major humanitarian effort of the last 50 years.

This man is a disgrace to the university. How could we let someone like this be a part of our community?
