Flashes defeat Oregon, advance to College World Series

On Monday night in Eugene, Ore., senior shortstop Jimmy Rider stepped up to the plate in the ninth inning of a tie game against the Oregon Ducks with the potential game-winning run standing on second base.

Rider swung and hit a high pop fly to left field, a seemingly catchable ball for the Oregon outfielders. However, the left fielder lost the ball in the sun, and it dropped to the ground just inside fair territory.

The winning run scored, and the celebration began.

Join the Kent State Alumni Association and fellow fans in Omaha for a pre-game tailgating event starting at 2 p.m. (CT) at the Old Mattress Factory’s Omaha Baseball Village.

Serving as a home base for Kent State fans, the tent is a short walk to TD Ameritrade Stadium in Omaha, Neb., where the Kent State baseball team will be playing in its first College World Series. The team’s first game is against the Arkansas Razorbacks.

“We wanted there to be one place for all of our fans to get together and celebrate this accomplishment because it’s a huge feat for us to be there,” said Lori Randorf, executive director of the Alumni Association.

Tom Hamilton's plane landed in Cincinnati on Tuesday afternoon, but his emotions are still sky high — and have been for more than a week.

The radio voice of the Indians rejoined the team Tuesday, as he continues to try to juggle his baseball life and his family life — which for the last two frenetic weekends have been one and the same.

If he wasn't so exhilarated, he'd be exhausted.

Hamilton has spent the last two weekends following Kent State's incredible, improbable, historic march to the College World Series. As if that wasn't thrilling enough, a week ago, Hamilton's son Nick, Kent State's designated hitter, was drafted by the Indians in the 35th round of Major League Baseball's June draft.
