The Student Recreation and Wellness Center will undergo construction from July 2 to 15 to replace the flooring on the lower fitness level.
Kim Rufra, associate director for the Department of Recreational Services, said machines will still be available for members to use. All machines will be moved to the basketball courts during installment of the new floors.
The current flooring in the lower fitness area is carpet. Rufra said the carpet has been hard to keep clean, which is the reason for switching to a fitness-type flooring; the same flooring is used throughout the free-weight areas.
Joelle Lucas, sophomore zoology major, said she is happy with the decision to change the flooring.
“The carpet that is in there has some stains on it, and I wondered how much sweat it was holding,” Lucas said. “The rubber fitness floors are much nicer and will be able keep clean much better.”
All services and programing will still be available during the two-week construction.
The only inconvenience the construction will generate are fewer basketball courts will be available. Rufra said moving weight and cardio machines to the basketball courts was the best solution.
Adrianna Manniko, freshman pre-nursing major, said the temporary arrangement will be strange.
“I won’t be used to running on a treadmill out in the middle of the basketball court,” Manniko said, “but I can make it work for a couple of weeks.”
