Kent State University Geauga student Maxfield Ligon, 19, was killed in a car accident on August 4, 2019.

Ligon and Cidney Thomas, 20, died after their car collided with a vehicle driven by Michael Kantos, 58, which drove into oncoming traffic on I-90, according to a statement released by the Cleveland Police Department.

Two other passengers in the vehicle were injured as well. Police said the incident is still under investigation.

A tribute was held on August 9 in the Twinsburg High School parking lot. Balloons were released and those who knew Ligon spoke in his memory.

“The city was shocked to hear about Max’s tragic death,” Twinsburg Mayor Ted Yates said. “He will be truly missed. My prayers and thoughts are with Max’s family.”

Angela Spalsbury, dean at Kent State Geauga, released a statement regarding Ligon’s death.

“We are saddened by the loss of Maxfield Ligon, who had enrolled for fall classes at our Regional Academic Center in Twinsburg,” Spalsbury said in the statement. “The thoughts and prayers of the entire Kent State community are tonight with Maxfield’s family, friends, and those who knew and loved him as they endure such a heartbreaking loss. We also offer our condolences to the family of Cidney Thomas, and we pray for the others injured in this terrible crash,” Spalsbury said.
