        Several students received phishing emails in July Several students received phishing emails in July and August about changing their university-affiliated email passwords. Now, the university’s Information Technology department is working on educating the campus community about phishing emails.         Main Street Kent hosted Oktoberfest on Saturday fr Main Street Kent hosted Oktoberfest on Saturday from noon to 10 p.m. featuring live entertainment, German food and a variety of beer. Local businesses really brought the life to the event. Bell Tower Brewing, North Water Brewing and Madcap Brewing Co. were a few of the local breweries to make an appearance. Jennifer Herman, the head griller and co-founder of Bell Tower Brewing and Briggete Tipton, another co-founder, promoted the brewery at the event. “It’s been quite successful,” Herman said. “This is the first time Main Street has had the local Kent Breweries involved in the event.         Throughout the United States, there have been 470 Throughout the United States, there have been 470 mass shootings and 2,500 casualties from gun violence in 2023 alone. Guns cause 81% of murders in the United States. We must eliminate open-carry laws and reform current statute language to ensure public safety. Owning a firearm is a constitutional right, but states retain the right to regulate guns under the constitution, particularly as it relates to open carry. It’s also important to note in the 1990’s through early 2000s, when there were extensive background checks and carry conceal laws that were heavily enforced, the firearm violence rate was 29 percent lower. Legislators understand those in favor of the open carry law. The open carry law allows citizens to obtain a firearm and carry it on their person without any form of regulation, conceal carry documents, or license. Some people rightfully question how laws against open carry will be effective. Their argument: the people violently using guns won’t follow the laws anyway.         Kent State football closed out non-conference play Kent State football closed out non-conference play by taking its game into Sunday morning, when the Flashes lost to Fresno State 53-10. This is the second time in four games Kent State has given up more than 50 points in a game. “A lot of credit to Fresno State, they’re a great football team,” coach Kenni Burns said. “They’re going to do great things. I’d be shocked if they don’t win the Mountain West.         Mariah the Scientist performed at the Undergraduat Mariah the Scientist performed at the Undergraduate Student Government’s fall concert Saturday night, becoming the first female artist to headline the concert since the COVID-19 pandemic. Brian Johnson, USG’s director of programming and a senior public health major, said he wanted to see more diverse performers headline the concerts. “I’m big on representation, and since I’ve been here, which is fall of 2020, I haven’t really seen any female headliners since the pandemic,” Johnson said.
