A 3-on-3 basketball tournament is scheduled to take place Saturday, March 18 from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m in the Kent State Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC).

The winner of the tournament will represent Kent State University at the fifth-annual Rubber City Shootout (RCS), a 16-team tournament held at the University of Akron April 16 and 17. The event is sponsored by the Akron Zips Officiating Organization.

Team registration must be done at the pro-shop in the SRWC or online by Wednesday, March 15. Registration is $15, and teams are guaranteed to play at least two games during the duration of the tournament.

Eric Rohrabaugh, a junior exercise science major, attended last year’s Rubber City Shootout. He did not participate, but came to cheer on his friends.

“It was a really cool atmosphere,” Rohrabaugh said. “There were a ton of different schools there (and) most of them were from Ohio, I think. Kent’s team ended up finishing second behind Akron, but it was still a fun thing to watch.”

According to imleagues.com, a website that keeps track of intramural sports, Akron won last year’s tournament, 7-0; Kent’s main campus claimed second place, 4-2; and Kent’s Stark campus finished third, 5-3.

The official video of last year’s event can be found here.

As of Saturday, March 11, there are 11 spots remaining for teams who wish to register. Teams must have three-to-four players, consisting of at least three starters, and a maximum of one substitute, and co-ed teams are welcome.

The Kent Stater was unable to reach representatives from the Zips Officiating Organization for comments on the upcoming event.
