Kent State wrestling traveled to Annapolis, Maryland this weekend – with a limited roster due to injuries – for the Navy Classic, where Flashes finished sixth out of 13 teams.

Although the Flashes did not have the team performance they hoped for, Kent State, junior Mack McGuire stole the show, winning the 133-pound title with a perfect 5-0 finish on the weekend.

McGuire topped Wisconsin’s Ryan Taylor, 6-3 in the championship match inside Wesley Brown Field House.

Kent State also saw a good performance from senior 174-pounder Caleb Marsh, who finished in second place for the Flashes after losing 4-1 to former All-American Cody Walters of Ohio University.

Andrassy said he understands his team is not at 100 percent as many continue to battle injuries. Without top wrestler and junior Ian Miller and other notable wrestlers like Cole Baxter and Tyler Small out, other wrestlers have had to step up and fill those gaps.

The goal is for all of these wrestlers to be healthy in time for the meet against Buffalo, Andrassy said. At last week’s practice, Andrassy stressed the importance of being healthy for the middle and end of the season, which is when winning in the Mid-American Conference really matters.

Kent State will be away from the mat until Dec. 6 when they travel to the University at Buffalo.
