Opinion: The Winter Olympics are a hot mess — but is it worth it?

The Winter Olympics begin in Sochi, Russia in just a few days, and it is already being widely reported as the most expensive in history. Russian President Vladimir Putin and his government have put 51 billion taxpayer dollars — just $7 billion less than the cost of the London and Beijing games combined — into updating the infrastructure of the city so that it can handle an event with the scope of an Olympic games.
