University library to close Saturday

The University Library will be closed Saturday morning for safety reasons to allow for the completion of a roofing project that has been in progress since May.

“On Saturday, they’re going to bring a giant crane and park it in the executive parking lot,” said J. Mark Pike, the assistant dean for library administrative services. “They will be hoisting roofing materials to the top of the fourth-floor building and the top of the 12th-story tower.”

Todd Shaffer, project manager for the Office of the University Architect, said the reroofing is only a temporary fix to the problem. The construction will fix the roofs and keep the library dry until funding becomes available for a full restoration of the building.

The process is expected to take eight hours, and Shaffer expects the entire project to be completed some time in October.

“The crane will be set up at 6 in the morning, and they’ll work from 8 to 4,” Shaffer said.

The library will reopen for students after the construction is completed in the afternoon.
