Say goodbye to the iPhone we used to know.

Apple’s new mobile operating system, iOS 7, will be giving its mobile devices a new makeover and features this fall.

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, said he is enthusiastic about the new changes at the annual Worldwide Developers Conference.

“It is the most significant iOS update since the original iPhone debuted,” Cook said.

Pratim Datta, associate professor of management and information systems, feels the change has been a long time coming.

“A company like Apple always comes up with something big, and customers have high standards for their innovation,” Datta said.

Briana Williams, junior exercise science major, agrees that Apple keeps its users coming back for more.

“I think the new system is different and what Apple needed to do to keep their customers interested in their product,” Williams said.

Apple mobile users can look forward to new features and a new interface design.

“They’re really working on the bones of the systems by trying to make it better, and it is solid move forward,” Datta said.

The icons now have a flatter, brighter look with Helvetica typeface.

Jasmine Freeman, iPhone user and senior fashion merchandising major, is not as excited for the design.

“I’ve seen the new design and I personally like the old one better, but I guess it takes some getting used to,” she said.

Siri will now have the option to use a man’s voice instead of a woman’s voice. Safari will have the same pattern, but it will have a new way to scroll through open tabs. Users can now scroll through open pages by scrolling from top to bottom, instead of from left to right, and apps will automatically update.

“It is the best idea ever,” Freeman said. “I hate those app update things because they are so slow. This way makes it so much more convenient.”

The photo app will now let you take pictures in many different views and use new filters. Users have the option to share photos to their own and to other’s AirDrop and Photo Stream.

One of the newest features is Apples’ answer to Pandora, iTunes Radio. This new addition will allow users to stream free music.

iOS 7 will be available to products including and newer than the iPhone 4, iPad, and 5th generation iPod Touch.

Datta appreciates the new changes, but he feels something bigger is coming from Apple.

“It is a prelude to products Apple is going to launch this year,” he said. “This is one big reason why they are pushing this forward.”
