Newly released numbers show the majority of Portage County schools will not see additional funding in 2014. Governor Kasich wanted to take steps towards education equality when he presented his funding proposal last week, but only four schools in Portage County got a boost including: Streetsboro City Schools, Field Local Schools, Ravenna Schools and Aurora City. The four schools listed earned anywhere from a 30-thousand to 1.5-million dollar increase, while the remainder of schools received nothing.

According to Ohio property values, the schools getting increases sit among the wealthier districts – which contradicts Kasich’s plan to balance the budget between rich and poor communities. Right now, nothing is set in stone, but if the proposal goes into effect, schools can expect funds to roll in as early as July.

Kent City School’s Superintendent Dr. Joseph Giancola hoped Governor Kasich could create a balance that would help children and families in poverty. However, he and Streetsboro High School Principal Eric Rauchcolb felt that creating equal funding across districts is a challenging task.
