After splitting its first two Mid-American Conference games, the Kent State men’s basketball team heads back on the road for its first game of the season against a divisional foe.

The Flashes will attempt to record their second straight game victory when they take on MAC East rival Buffalo Wednesday night at Alumni Arena in Buffalo, N.Y.

Kent State is coming off its first conference victory of the year, a 61-47 win over the Ball State Cardinals on Saturday, and the team can break above the .500 mark in conference play with a road win over the Bulls.

With the team sitting at a 10-6 overall record after defeating the Cardinals, head coach Rob Senderoff expressed optimism that the Flashes will continue to improve in several areas as the season progresses. Senderoff noted half-court defense as one of the main focuses for improvement and added that the Flashes need to improve as an offensive group.

“Offensively, moving the basketball and sharing the basketball is a big focus,” Senderoff said. “We need to make sure that we’re more reliant on each other and making simple plays offensively.”

The Flashes have won five of their last six games dating back to their victory over Saint Francis on Dec. 20. Their one setback came in their conference opener when they fell at home to Toledo 70-58.

“Obviously we lost at home, which is something you never want to do in league play,” Senderoff said. “We lost our league opener, which is something you never want to do in league play. But then we went on the road against a team that won two straight games and came away with a win. So I think we showed a lot of resolve in that game.”

Kent State will look to not only begin another winning streak, but also end a streak of losses at Buffalo’s home venue. The Flashes have dropped four straight games at Alumni Arena with their last win coming on Feb. 19, 2008, when they defeated the Bulls 76-66.

Buffalo is 5-11 overall this season and currently sits in last place in the MAC East Division with a 0-2 record in the conference. After losing 86-68 to Ohio University in their conference opener, the Bulls fell just short in their home game against Miami University, losing 58-57.

The Bulls are led by junior forward Javon McCrea, who is averaging 15.8 points and 6.8 rebounds so far this season. Buffalo leads the MAC in offensive rebounds and averages 37 total rebounds per game, which ranks third in the conference.

Kent State is third among MAC teams with nearly 70 points per game, led by senior forward Chris Evans. Evans leads the Flashes in points per game (16.6) and rebounds per game (7.3), while senior guard Randal Holt is second on the team at 13.4 points per game. The duo scored a combined 30 points off the bench in the Flashes’ victory over Ball State on Saturday.

Wednesday’s game, scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m., will air live on Sportstime Ohio and ESPN3, and the radio broadcast for the game will be available on 640 WHLO.
