Senior kicker Freddy Cortez and sophomore running back Trayion Durham have both received Mid-American Conference honors following Kent State’s 41-24 win against Western Michigan.

Cortez was named MAC East Division Special Teams Player of the Week Monday, while Durham earned MAC Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season.

Cortez made two field goals — from 46 yards and 43 yards — to help the Flashes defeat the Broncos in the homecoming game Saturday. The senior also tied former Kent State quarterback Joshua Cribbs on the team’s all-time scoring list with 246 career points.

This season, Cortez has converted on 11 of his 15 field goal attempts, including his last eight in a row.

Durham earned offensive honors after rushing for a career-high 124 yards on 19 carries and scoring a touchdown against Western Michigan.

Durham also won the award after Kent State’s win against Eastern Michigan Oct. 6, when he scored two touchdowns after running for 116 yards on 24 carries.

Durham has the team’s second-most rushing yards, with 649 this season.
