        To an overflowing crowd, the student fashion group To an overflowing crowd, the student fashion group Modista displayed their annual fashion show Dec. 2 with designs inspired by the concept of “paradox”, the idea of pairing two contradictory statements or concepts together.

“We wanted to shed a light on a lot of the contradictions and hypocrisy and lies that we see in the fashion industry,” Modista president Rileyanna Karić said. “A lot of it is more metaphorical than you’ll see in the show, but a lot of it is social commentary on fashion.”

The show production went precisely how the junior fashion merchandising student anticipated.

        The Kent State wrestling team left Saturday aftern The Kent State wrestling team left Saturday afternoon with losses to Gardner-Webb, Buffalo and Chattanooga. 

In the first event, KSU fell to a 28-11 loss against Gardner-Webb. In the second matchup, Kent State dropped its conference matchup to Buffalo 25-15. Chattanooga got the blowout win in the final matchup for a 38-3 final.

The Flashes were coming off their Navy Classic event on Nov. 18, with sophomore Blake Schaffer wrestling to a fifth-place finish.

        In the last ever release of the four-team College In the last ever release of the four-team College Football Playoff rankings, the committee gave America one final inconsistency.

Things started off pretty easily for the ranking committee, as they put the Michigan Wolverines at the top spot. They are the first Big Ten team to enter the College Football Playoff as the top-ranked team. 

The Wolverines completed their second straight 13-0 start with a 26-0 win over Iowa for their third straight Big Ten championship.

        The smell of homemade pies filled the gallery Satu The smell of homemade pies filled the gallery Saturday, as Standing Rock Cultural Arts, a nonprofit cultural arts organization, hosted the 26th Annual Pie Festival fundraiser to raise money for the operating expenses of the gallery. 

Individuals who attended the event were able to purchase whole pies and slices of pie and bid on art pieces in the silent auction. The gallery also had live music for customers in the store. 

Anita Gontkovsky, assistant at Standing Rock Cultural Arts, has been around for about 10 of the pie festivals and said having the pies brings people into the gallery.

        Festival of Lights rings in the holiday season. Festival of Lights rings in the holiday season. 

The City of Kent sparkled bright Saturday as the community celebrated its annual Festival of Lights downtown on Dec. 2.

Santa and Mrs. Claus counted down the seconds until the downtown area became lit up for the first time this holiday season. Some of the festivities included a hot chocolate bar, horse and carriage rides and a chance to see Santa.

The Festival of Lights attracted many community members, as South Water Street was packed full of parents, kids and college students.

        In 2020, 23% of undergraduate students nationwide In 2020, 23% of undergraduate students nationwide experienced some form of food insecurity, as reported by the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study.

According to the USDA, food insecurity is defined as “a lack of consistent access to enough food for every person in a household to live an active, healthy life.”

For students struggling on Kent State’s campus, there are several resources available to help alleviate food insecurity, such as the Crisis, Advocacy, Resources, Education, and Support Center (CARES), which runs a donation-based food pantry for students.

        While entering their first time living independent While entering their first time living independently, students may find the process of signing a lease and renting a place to be nerve wracking, as they face concerns about getting scammed, paying too much in rent or overlooking little details in the renting process. 

But guidance is available. From walk-throughs to recording damages, tenant-landlord counselor Steven Ellsworth said he aims to mentor first time renters to ensure a smooth transition to the next phase of their life.

        At 11 years old, Dino Campisi, a freshman nursing At 11 years old, Dino Campisi, a freshman nursing major at Kent State, faced hardship when his father got into a motorcycle accident, leaving him paralyzed. He was in the hospital for roughly six months before he was transported to a nursing home. 

In 2020, his father suffered a brain hemorrhage in his sleep at one of his nursing homes, and on May 1, 2020, his father died. 

This was during the pandemic’s beginning, and people were just beginning to social distance. It was a time of uncertainty and doubt. Unfortunately, Campisi could not say goodbye to his father in person to follow COVID-19 protocols.

        The Kent State University Surplus Store, located a The Kent State University Surplus Store, located at 414 E. Main St., resells items the university no longer uses for affordable prices. 

The store is open every Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. and carries items such as chairs, couches, desks, electronics, books and more. 

Jeremy Watson came into the department three years ago and is now the storekeeper for the outlet.

        In June 2015, Dee Dee Blanchard was found stabbed In June 2015, Dee Dee Blanchard was found stabbed to death in her home. The two responsible were none other than her daughter, Gypsy Rose Blanchard and Nicholas Godejohn, Gypsy’s boyfriend.

Although this murder was already gruesome enough to make headlines, it also dominated national news for years due to the confusing and shocking background details of the case. 

Dee Dee had convinced the public and multiple health professionals for years that her daughter Gypsy was severely handicapped. She utilized this storyline in order to get money and other benefits from the government and amusement parks like Disney World. She was even able to get a house for free from Habitat for Humanity.

        Ohio House Speaker Jason Stephens (R-Kitts Hills) Ohio House Speaker Jason Stephens (R-Kitts Hills) said on Tuesday, Senate Bill 83 will not have enough votes to pass through the House. 

Stephens has been adamant before about the bill needing to change in order to have enough support. This message contrasts with what has previously been seen in the Ohio Senate, where Senate Bill 83 passed in a 21-10 vote in May. 

After going through the Senate, the bill underwent a number of changes from its original form, including building fewer barriers between Ohio universities and Chinese schools and exemptions from certain American history courses. Ultimately, Stephens still does not see enough support generated for the bill to pass through the Higher Education Committee.
