Bob Lindsay, Kent State women’s basketball coach of 23 years and the Mid-American Conference’s most wins coach with 418, will not get his contract renewed, Athletic Director Joel Nielsen said in a statement Wednesday.

“After an extensive review of our women’s basketball program I feel at this time it is in the best interest of our program to move in a different direction,” the statement said.

“On Wednesday afternoon, I informed Bob Lindsay that we were not going to renew his contract. I would like to thank Coach Lindsay for his leadership of this storied program during his tenure. He has been a mentor and a great example for the young women that have been associated with our program. This was an extremely difficult decision and I wish Coach Lindsay well in his future endeavors. “

“Kent State is the standard of excellence in the Mid-American Conference,” Nielsen said. “Every year we are in contention for and routinely win championships in many sports. We want to see that again in women’s basketball in the future.  Our conference is well-positioned in women’s basketball and we aim to get back to competing for MAC titles.”

Lindsay came off his second worst year as coach of the Flashes with a 6-21 record, 5-11 in the MAC. For his career, Lindsay had a .612 winning percentage with seven MAC East titles, four NCAA Tournament appearances, one NCAA Tournament win, three WNIT appearances and amassed 20-wins in a season 13 times.

A “national search” has already begun to replace Lindsay, Nielsen said in the statement.

“I am confident this job will be attractive and we’ll have great candidates to consider,” Nielsen said. “Our job will be to hire the best person and do it in a timely fashion.”

Personal accomplishments for Lindsay include two MAC Coach of the Year honors (1996, 1998) and one WBCA District IV Coach of the Year honor (2000). Under Lindsay, the 1995-96 season led to the program’s first and only NCAA Tournament win with an upset of seventh seeded Texas A&M (72-68).

The Flashes expect all 10 players to return from last season as well as a recruiting class that has not been announced yet. No candidates have been announced for the job yet.

The Kent State athletic department announced yesterday it would not renew Bob Lindsay’s contract as the Kent State women’s basketball head coach for the 2012-2013 season.

As coach of the Flashes, Lindsay had 13 20-win seasons and four NCAA Tournament appearances since 1996. Lindsay was honored last season for compiling 400 career victories.

Joel Nielsen, Kent State University’s athletic director, said the department would begin searching for a new women’s head basketball coach immediately.

Lindsay exits with a career coaching record of 412 wins and 235 losses, a .637 winning percentage.

“I would like to thank Coach Lindsay for his leadership of this storied program during his tenure,” Nielsen said in the athletic department’s press release. “He has been a mentor and a great example for the young women that have been associated with our program. This was an extremely difficult decision and I wish Coach Lindsay well in his future endeavors.”
