Kent police release names in Sunday night shooting

A Kent resident is dead in a possible double shooting that took place Sunday night in the 700 block of Akron Boulevard on Kent’s southwest side.

Kent Police are searching for Jose Quinones, 52, who allegedly shot and killed Belinda Mellott, 49 and injured Gregory Cochran, 35 before fleeing.

Tom Decker, chief investigator for the Portage County Coroner’s Office confirmed today that one person died in the shooting.

A suspect description put out to local law enforcement described the shooter as a bald male carrying a semiautomatic firearm. He was wearing a collared shirt, blue jeans and black socks at the time of the shooting, which reportedly occurred shortly after 10:30 p.m.

Information on his race, height, weight or age was not immediately available.

The suspect may have been driving a white sedan — possibly a Toyota Camry or Chevrolet Caprice.

Akron Boulevard is located between Middlebury Road and Munroe Falls Kent Road. The street is lined with two-family homes dating to the 1960s.

Police remained at the scene of the shooting. Akron Boulevard was barricaded and off-limits to through traffice until late this morning.

This is the second fatality on the west side of Kent in six weeks.

Leonard Armstrong, 49, Kent, was recently charged for the murder of Jeffrey Sipes, 57, Kent, after allegedly stabbing Sipes to death on June 6 at an apartment in the Silver Meadows area.
