Two Kent State graduates have made downtown the home of their newly opened coffee shop on North Water Street.

Bent Tree Coffee Roasters, located at 313 N. Water St. across from Brewhouse and three buildings down from Scribbles Coffee, opened its doors last week.

Owners Ryan Brannon and Mike Mistur, who met 11 years ago while waiting tables at The Zephyr, said they chose to open in Kent because of their love for the city, and because they felt there was no place like their shop downtown.

“We think Kent could support (our coffee shop),” Brannon said. “We have been home roasting for awhile now, and it’s really good coffee.”

The new business partners are looking into accepting FlashCash to reach out to Kent State students.

“We want to be involved in every aspect of the university as possible,” Brannon said.

Brannon added that he and Mistur would like to use student art for the shop’s decorations.

For the summer, the shop is featuring cold-brewed iced coffee. “Brewing iced coffee cold from the start makes it stronger, and the taste is much more fresh,” said Brannon.

The shop offers coffee by the pound or cup, coffee tastings, custom blends, business delivery, home delivery (in Kent only) and home coffee supplies. They also have many different blends of organic fair trade coffee beans that they will offer daily.

Owners of Scribbles Coffee declined to comment on the new coffee shop or potential competition.

An all-day grand opening ceremony is planned for Aug. 11. The official ribbon-cutting ceremony will be at 2 p.m., and Mayor Jerry Fiala will attend.
