Off-Campus Housing Project Still Not Approved

The plan for new student housing on South Lincoln Street hit another dead end with the Kent Planning Commission.

At a meeting on Tuesday night, the planning commission was still worried about the effect that these new apartment complexes could have on the community

A representative for Edwards Communities, requested that the company come back to the next commission meeting on December 7, although the vote was supposed to be taken that night.

Edwards Communities spoke to the planning commission and a room full of residents about the issues they are working on.

The company previously held a neighborhood meeting to personally talk to concerned residents about the idea of new student housing being built.

If in the company gets an OK from the commission, they will build a large housing complex in the empty field near the Eagles Landing and Dartmouth apartment complexes.

All rooms will be fully furnished and residents will only be responsible for paying their electric bills.

Still, tension was in the air and many people nodded in approval as residents voiced their concerns about the project.

SOT (Amanda Ennis, Resident): I THINK THERE ARE STILL SOME PRETTY SERIOUS FLAWS IN THE PLAN

SOT (Ed Kovach, Resident): PEOPLE COME IN AND THEY WANT TO LIVE IN KENT, BUY A HOUSE IN KENT AND THEY SEE MULTIPLE HOUSING, MULTIPLE HOUSING, MULTIPLE HOUSING ON EVERY STREET….WHERE THE HELL ARE THEY GONNA BUY?

SOT: (Larry Andrews): PEOPLE THINK IT’S A TOWN AND GOWN ISSUE BUT IT’S NOT, IT’S ABOUT THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN THE NEIGHBORHOODS ADJACENT TO THE UNIVERSITY.
