Portage residents ditch cars, ride bikes for climate change awareness
October 7, 2010
A rally and ride will be held Sunday in downtown Kent to encourage greener transportation.
The “Carbon CarBan” is sponsored by TransPortage, a group of county residents who want to raise awareness about climate change.
The “CarBan” will begin at 1 p.m. at the Home Savings Bank Plaza and is part of an international campaign by the Global Work Party, which aims to cut carbon emissions by 10 percent per year.
Sarah Brower, TransPortage member and biology graduate student, said the event will involve two bike routes: a one-mile route for families and children and a seven-mile route for more experienced riders.
Brower said she hopes the rally will encourage others to reduce their carbon footprint by walking or carpooling, even if it’s just for one day.
“It’s a small step,” she said.
