Dance Crews Battle at Kiva

Five regional dance crews will be competing at the Kiva tonight as a part of the Kent State chapter of NAACP’s Battle of the Crews 2.

Admission is $5 or $3 with the donation of any school supplies, JaRel Clay, community service and fundraising chair for the NAACP, said.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the show will begin promptly at 6 p.m.

While dance is the emphasis of the event, it will also feature performances from hip-hop artists Cyncere and Len.Knox, music from 107.9 FM and several contests involving the audience.

The group has been collecting supplies for local schools throughout September.

Clay said the group has collected about six boxes of supplies from students so far and two boxes from faculty. The group hopes the event will encourage even more students to get involved with the initiative, he said.

The group researched schools in the area to decide who would receive the donations. It chose Davey Elementary in Kent, as well as two Akron-area schools.

“This event is multifaceted in many ways,” Clay said. “It’s more of a production.”
