Cornhole competition raises $750 in one week

The Student Recreation and Wellness Center’s lunchtime cornhole tournaments are winding down to the semi-finals as four two-person teams battle for the number one spot this afternoon in a competition that raised $720 in one week for the United Way.

The cornhole boards were donated by Mantua business owner Jeff Lisewski of Lite ‘Em Up Cornhole. Lisewski is also the inventor of the boards, which light up along the sides, similar to the way a runway is lit up for landing airplanes. The hole at the top of the board is also lit up, and Lisewski even donated light-up “glo-bags” to toss.

“The light-up board really came to be as a product of the environment,” Lisewski said. “It’s tiring having to get head lamps, flood lights and tiki torches to light up the boards in the dark.”

Dave Herpy, outdoor adventure and camp coordinator for the rec center, said the 24 teams that signed up for the single-elimination tournament are now down to four teams that will compete in the rec center’s lobby entrance today beginning at 12:15 p.m.

“There will be two matches for each team in the semi-finals in addition to the final match,” Herpy said.

He said the teams have been playing the games best two out of three instead of having a double-elimination bracket.

The fundraiser is part of the university’s United Way campaign. The main campus’ fundraising goal is $225,000 in donations to the non-profit organization.
