Gallery has range of artwork for viewing

Now through Oct. 16, the Kent State School of Art is hosting its biennial faculty show in the Art School Gallery.

Located in the Art Building, the exhibit features work produced by current Kent State faculty, emeriti and faculty from regional campuses.

Anderson Turner, director of galleries for the School of Art, said the exhibit is doing a couple of things.

“It’s letting the students know what the faculty is making,” he said. “And it shows the research by the faculty to the community and the university.

Works from faculty include abstract paintings, sculptures, photography and video artwork.

“That’s what’s wonderful about it,” Turner said. “It’s a variety. It shows the quality of the research of the School of Art.”

One artist, Daniel Rohn, hasn’t been heard from since 1993. He sent in his archival pigment print entitled “Spruce Stump,” which surprised several faculty members.

“In the arts, we keep a professional tie to our school,” Turner said. He said the entry was a shocker, but well-received.

The exhibition, which will not return for another two years, is a “tour-de-force of a variety of styles,” Turner said, and it allows students and surrounding denizens to view what the professors of the School of Art work on when they are not teaching future artists.

“It’s a great place to stop in and see the work (of professionals),” Turner said. “It’s a glimpse of the history of the school.”

Hours are from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
