The Mid-American Conference named Kent State sophomore Nic Bedelyon Wrestler of the Week on Monday for his dominant 9-3 upset against Central Michigan’s ninth-ranked Scotti Sentes.

Bedelyon’s win in the dual meet’s opening match Thursday night began a 9-0 run for the Flashes. Kent State ended up with an 18-14 victory over the Chippewas for its first MAC championship since 1990.

“It’s a cool feeling, knowing there’s six teams in the MAC and 10 kids on a team and I was one of the guys to get the award,” Bedelyon said.

“But I think our whole team should have got it for the win against Central (Michigan). We all wrestled the perfect match; even the guys that lost did what they needed to do.”

Bedelyon scored three takedowns, two near-fall points and an escape in his match, avenging a loss to Sentes earlier this season when he was pinned in 13 seconds.

The victory also gave Bedelyon his 50th career win, improving his 2008-09 record to 23-7 and 5-0 in MAC dual competition.

Bedelyon is the fourth member of Kent State’s wrestling team to earn the award this season. Other Flashes to win the award include two-time recipients senior Drew Lashaway and redshirt freshman Dustin Kilgore, as well as junior Danny Mitcheff.
