Cleveland trip offers poverty education
October 30, 2008
Several students will spend their Halloween weekend learning about a scary subject: poverty.
AmeriCorps VISTA is supervising Kent State’s Cleveland Immersion Trip from 7 p.m. Friday to 5 p.m. Sunday.
The trip involves seven students, two AmeriCorps VISTA volunteers and one Kent State staff member.
The Cleveland Immersion Trip will introduce students to Cleveland’s poorest residents in impoverished neighborhoods. Students will reflect on issues related to poverty Friday, canvass neighborhoods Saturday and take part in a service project Sunday.
The $35 weekend trip includes bus fare from Kent State to Cleveland’s west side, lodging at the Catholic Worker House and $2 meals three times a day.
An average meal for people living at poverty level costs about $2, said Anna Gosky, senior special assistant of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs.
