An awards ceremony will be held today at noon in the Student Center Ballroom for the faculty who were honored with the 2008 Distinguished Teaching Awards and Outstanding Teaching Awards.

The awards will be presented at the University Teaching Council’s 15th annual Celebrating College Teaching conference, which will begin with lunch and move to keynote speaker Sandra Eaglen, a lecturer in the English department, before the awards are presented.

The award recipients will receive a plaque and a $1,500 cash prize. The plaques will be displayed in the second floor hallway of the Student Center. Finalists for both awards were chosen by students.

This year, the Distinguished Teaching Awards will go to Kimberly Schimmel, associate professor in the School of Exercise, Leisure and Sport; Irene Gianakos, associate professor of psychology; and Thomas Sosnowski, associate professor of history.

Mary Beth Rollick, assistant professor of mathematics, will join Barbara Andreas, professor of biological sciences, and Jonathan Secaur, assistant professor of physics, in receiving the 2008 Outstanding Teaching Award.

Though both awards will be presented at the conference, the Distinguished Teaching Award only applies to tenure-track faculty members. A faculty member must have taught at Kent State for five years without being part of the tenure track to receive an Outstanding Teaching Award.

The ceremony is free and open to all those who wish to attend.
