Kent State’s volleyball team plans to look ahead from last night’s match against Colgate. After the team lost 3-1 to the Raiders, it’s understandable why.

The Flashes (0-1) dropped the first two games 25-15 and 25-18 and then blew a seven-point lead in the fourth to give the victory to Colgate.

“We really just didn’t play well,” Kent State coach Glen Conley said. “Colgate was a good team. My hat’s off to them; they beat us. They came out and took it to us, and we just didn’t have any answers to them at all.”

Colgate hitter Katrina Zawojski pounded Kent State, registering 22 kills with a hitting percentage of over .600. Conley said despite the team being prepared for Zawojski, she still “just ate us up.”

“She was their best player and she played like it,” he said, “and we couldn’t stop her. That really killed us.”

Senior Krista Groce said the team didn’t show any energy during the match.

“I don’t know if people weren’t mentally prepared,” she said, “but the bottom line is we just didn’t come out strong and it hurt us.”

Groce recorded eight kills on the night. Leading the team offensively was senior Ashley Feutz with 22 kills. On defense, senior Sarah Kaczuk posted 17 digs.

Today the Flashes face Boston at 11 a.m. and West Virginia at 5 p.m. For now, Conley said the team will try to move past yesterday’s loss.

“Tomorrow’s another day, and we get another chance to go out and prove ourselves,” he said. “We’re going to show up, and hopefully we pass the test tomorrow.”
