PARTA attempts to halt driver strike
August 27, 2008
Portage Area Regional Transportation Authority will hold a board meeting at 7 p.m. tonight in an attempt to resolve the union strike that began Monday. The meeting is at the PARTA office and is open to the public.
PARTA buses continued to operate as members of the Ohio Association of Public School Employees Local 037 picketed in front of the PARTA office on Summit Street for the third consecutive day yesterday. The strike began after PARTA failed to approve the “fair share” provision of the proposed contract, which would require non-union employees to pay a share of administrative fees in exchange for benefits received from union negotiations.
According to a statement released by PARTA Tuesday, the “so-called ‘fair share’ provision is the only issue that separates the parties from a complete, tentative agreement.”
