Reader’s feedback is best reward

My favorite moment of writing sports this year was hearing feedback that we were putting out the best section in years.

It was an honor to be a part of something so special. Every person on our staff dedicated so much time to their beats, and it definitely paid off.

As for sports, my favorite moment was watching the Kent State wrestling team evolve this season. Not many people knew it, but the basketball team was not the only squad to be ranked in the top 25. The wrestling team was as high as 20th in some polls.

At Nationals, Jermail Porter was just a point away from becoming the program’s first All-American since 1986. It was a special year for the team, and really turned me on to how outstanding of a sport wrestling is. With only losing one senior, I’m looking forward to seeing how the team improves for next season.

I would be in the wrong if I did not mention Kent State men’s basketball as well. While watching the team set records in the program, I was able to do live play-by-play for home games on Black Squirrel Radio. It was something I’ve always wanted to do.

Watching the Flashes become ranked was outstanding. In high school, I watched Duke and wondered what it would be like to go to a school with a top 25 program. We had that for a short time this season, and I hope that Geno Ford and next year’s unit can bring the same kind of energy that Jim Christian, Mike Scott and Haminn Quaintance did.

Thanks to everyone who picked up the sports section and gave it a once over three times a week. Journalists love nothing more than to have reader’s feedback.
