Eta Sigma Gamma will sponsor Bicycle Safety Day from noon to 5 p.m. today in Risman Plaza.

Colin Dean, president of Eta Sigma Gamma, said the event will feature a representative from the Kent State Police Department, who will talk about campus traffic safety. Representatives from Eta Sigma Gamma will discuss helmet safety, and a representative from Eddy’s Bike Shop in Stow will talk about how bike maintenance is important for safety. Dean said the first 60 students at the event will receive free bike helmets.

Dean said Eta Sigma Gamma decided to sponsor Bicycle Safety Day because it is a health education honor society. Members of the fraternity looked at safety issues on campus and decided bicycle safety was often overlooked, he added.

“We found that an extremely minute amount of students use helmets, follow traffic rules or use proper maintenance,” Dean said.
