Backpack and camp out at the Laurel Highlands in Southwestern Pennsylvania with the Adventure Center from Oct. 27 to Oct. 28.

“This trip is well worth it for people who have never backpacked,” said Dave Herpy, the outdoor adventure and camp coordinator for the Student Recreation and Wellness Center. “(Backpacking) is the best way to enjoy the wilderness.”

Participants will leave the morning of the 27th and hike for five to 10 miles before setting up camp. Each participant will carry a 40-pound backpack with food, a tent and other supplies.

Two trip leaders, who have extensive backpacking experience, will head the group, Herpy said.

The next day, participants will hike the five to 10 miles back and arrive home late Sunday afternoon.

Registration ends Oct. 24 and costs $100 for students and members and $150 for nonmembers.

The mandatory pre-trip meeting, including a back country basics clinic, will be Oct. 24 from 7 to 10 p.m. Participants will learn about the basics of backpacking, such as how to pack a backpack, how to cook and the “leave no trace” policy.

Those who are interested in backpacking but cannot participate in the trip can attend the clinic. The cost of the clinic for students and members is $10 and $15 for nonmembers.
