NAACP to put focus on violence

KSU-NAACP will hold its first meeting of the year at 7:30 p.m. in Room 313 of the Student Center.

Preston Mitchum, president of the organization, said the main goal for the semester will be to fight youth violence.

Following the meeting, the group will hold a vigil at Risman Plaza to honor the lives lost to violence. George Garrison, professor of Pan-African Studies, will speak at the vigil.

Other plans for the semester include registering students to vote and bringing diverse programs and speakers to campus. Mitchum said the group hopes to target the entire student body, not just one demographic.

As part of a nationwide movement, Mitchum encouraged anyone who attends the meeting or wants to fight racism to wear black today in support of the Jena 6. The Jena 6 are a group of black high school students from Louisiana who were arrested and charged with attempted second-degree murder and conspiracy after a white student was beaten.
