Cyber Cafe menu will be a garden party

The Food 4 Thought Cyber Caf‚ being built in White Hall will offer healthy meal options on a side of campus not known for having food.

Greta Siler, nutrition and dietetics instructor and menu designer, said the caf‚’s menu will feature lean meats, whole grain breads, smoothies, soups and salads.

“I wanted to create an environment where everyone can get healthy foods, such as breads with fiber and normal portion sizes,” Siler said.

Students can choose from dishes such as the Garden Party and Lean Green Protein and from smoothies such as the Berry Brainstorm.

The caf‚ will open in the fall and provide the nutrient-dense food and smaller portions through a partnership with the nutrition and dietetics department in the School of Family and Consumer Studies.

Siler said she surveyed 350 people in White Hall in order to create the menu.

Nate LaPrairie, junior integrated language arts major, said the food to be offered at the caf‚ will be a nice alternative to the fried food served elsewhere.

“It will really benefit people like me who have all their classes on that side of campus because there aren’t any food options right now, and it will be convenient,” LaPrairie said.

Siler said about 1,400 people are in White Hall every day, and there aren’t any close places to eat.

“A lot of times people don’t want to lose their parking space to go get food or walk far when it’s freezing outside,” she said.

Siler said help for the caf‚ is being pulled from hospitality management and nutrition and dietetics students.

She said the students working in the caf‚ will be paid unless it is for an internship. The students will also have the opportunity to create food items for the menu.
