It was 0730.

If you don’t understand military time, 0730 means early.

And early it was as the Army ROTC held its Awards Breakfast yesterday morning in the Student Center.

“It is an annual event that recognizes cadets’ service,” said Lt. Col. Dean Costas, professor of military science for Kent State’s Army ROTC program.

About 60 students, faculty and representatives from community military organizations were on hand as cadets were honored for their achievements.

The cadets were recognized for many reasons, such as leadership, character, enthusiasm, loyalty to the ROTC program and a knowledge of military science.

“It is important to note that the cadets who are receiving awards aren’t getting them if they aren’t doing well academically,” Costas said. “Not only do they have to be excelling in ROTC, but they have to stand out from their peers.”

Most of the morning’s awards were given, and presented, by different community military organizations.

“It is especially encouraging seeing young men and women in this manner,” said Bob Hackenberg, a representative from the Sons of the American Revolution. “They are learning and working to protect the rights of this country.”

The Sons of the American Revolution is an organization made up of men who can prove they are in the direct blood line of a soldier who fought in the American Revolution.

Twenty different Army ROTC cadets were honored with awards at the breakfast.

“I think it is just great,” Hackenberg said.
