Student designers’ creations took center stage as models walked the runway to live music before a crowd of 500 in the Kent State Ballroom last night.

Katie Wolfrum, a senior fashion merchandising major, won the 3rd annual Rock the Runway competition put on by the All Campus Programming Board and Kent Student Center Programming. Chelsea Paskvan, freshman fashion design major, took second place. The two top designers received a fashion design book and certificate of recognition.

Wolfrum’s collection, “It’s In the Bag,” included dresses made of burlap sacks and neon pink and yellow netting.

Wolfrum participated in last year’s contest, which didn’t have a theme, but said designing for this year’s event was more difficult.

“The rock theme made it tougher to find good designs and layout because you had to go with the rock theme,” she said.

Wolfrum said she participated in the contest because it allowed her to showcase her love of design.

The designs were judged on construction and portrayal of the show’s rock and roll theme. The three judges for the competition were: Sydney Sustarsic, a sophomore fashion design major who won last year’s competition; Christopher Taylor, ACPB vice president; and Sara Greave, an instructor from the School of Fashion Design and Merchandising.

Fifteen designers participated in the rock-themed competition. Amplexus and This is Exploding performed the runway music for the show.

Bethany Arrington, a freshman fashion design major, designed two dresses and skirt and shirt dresses for the contest. The inspiration for her “Hawethorne Ave.” collection came from an image of a dying rose.

“I took a lot of the colors I saw from it and mimicked the shaped of the rose in one of my skirts,” she said.

Arrington said she participated in the contest for the experience of making something and having it seen on the runway.
