History department may lose money

The Educational Policies Council is in the process of reviewing a proposal that would end funding for graduate assistants in the history department.

This proposal is a response to state legislature that went into effect last spring, which requires all Ohio universities receiving doctoral funding from the state to transfer some of this money to invest in science research; in Kent State’s case, liquid crystals and biomedical sciences.

“The challenge in this program universities will face is building science at the expense of other programs, without crippling these other areas,” Provost Paul Gaston said.

The committee has made no final decision regarding the matter, and Gaston said the proposal will continue to be reviewed.

“We don’t need to tell the state immediately where the money is coming from,” he said. “We just need to tell the state where the money will be going.”
