Fire guts house on College Avenue

The Kent Fire Department as well as neighboring departments responded to a house fire at 241 E. College Ave. tonight. No injuries are reported at this time.
Kenny Shingleton, Kelly Salser and Frank Elia, who were in the house when the fire started, said they smelled smoke coming from the vents. The fire started in the basement sometime around 8 p.m., they said.
Around the same time, neighbor Katie Ramunni said she spotted flames coming from the basement of the home and then called 911. As of 8:30 p.m., plumes of smoke were billowing from the house, and a crowd of more than 100 people had gathered in the area. One student said she could smell smoke from her house on South Willow Street.
