Bundle up and cheer on your Golden Flashes

“Fight on for KSU / Fight for the Blue and Gold! / We’re out to beat the foe / Fight on brave and bold!”

There’s never been a better time to memorize Kent State’s fight song than this weekend when the Flashes face their MAC foes, the Toledo Rockets.

We’ve been telling you all semester to go to Dix Stadium and support the football team, and we’re going to continue.

The team is 4-2 overall and, more importantly, 3-0 in the Mid-American Conference. Two more wins and the Flashes are bowl-eligible. If they can beat the Rockets and the Ohio University Bobcats in two weeks, the Flashes are a near lock for the MAC Championship game.

Wait.

The Kent State Golden Flashes have a legitimate shot at postseason glory?

Either hell has frozen over, or they’ll find some way to mess it up, right?

Tomorrow’s Homecoming game will go a long way in deciding how the season will end up.

As Kent State students and faculty, we have the chance to witness one important milestone: With a win, the Flashes will be 4-0 in the MAC for the first time in the team’s history.

They would also be in prime position to make it to a bowl game for the first time since 1972. Collegefootballnews.com currently has the Flashes projected to face Pitt in the International Bowl.

And that MAC Championship? If they continue on the current streak and win the MAC, it would be the first since 1978.

But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves.

First, the Flashes need to win tomorrow’s game. To win, they’ll need whatever help they can get.

They need a 12th man. (And woman, for that matter.)

This is the first year in a long time Kent State football fans have something other than the band to cheer about.

So pile on the blue and gold body paint, break out your pompoms and head down to Dix Stadium tomorrow. The game starts at 4 p.m., with tailgating beginning around 1.

If you need help staying warm, just drink a lot of hot chocolate (or beer) and scream your heart out.

And after that first touchdown, when the snare drum kicks the band into motion, sing along to the fight song.

This could be your chance to take part in a little Kent State football history – to say you were there when the Flashes dismantled the Rockets on their way to a MAC Championship.

Oh, and don’t forget. Here’s the second verse, memorize it like the first:

“Fight on for victory / Don’t stop until we’re through / We’re all together / Let’s go forward, K-S-U!”
