Like to work late? The pay is great

Are you a night owl looking for a great job? Working in campus security might be right up your alley.

Security aides patrol the campus from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. and check for safety issues.

The starting wage for a security aide is $6.20 per hour. After one semester, the pay increases to $6.50 per hour. Wages increase 20 cents for every consecutive semester of employment.

Area advisers, the first level of promotion, make $7.50 per hour with a 20 cent raise after every semester of consecutive employment.

Supervisors make $9.00 per hour with a 20 cent raise after every semester of consecutive employment.

Campus security also offers opportunities for employees to learn dispatch techniques.

“Dispatchers work in the security office and monitor all the radio traffic for the security aides,” said Ryan Robinson, a returning aide. “They run identification checks on students and also alert other aides and supervisors when back up is needed.”

Zaki Hazou, a recent Kent State graduate, worked as a security aide for four years, starting his freshman year. He became a supervisor during his senior year and was promoted to assistant manager after graduation.

“It’s something you can put on your resume and you meet a lot of people,” Hazou said. “It’s great for criminal justice majors or those wanting to get into law enforcement.”

Campus security currently has 45 aides and is still hiring, said Security Manager Brian Hellwig.

Applications are available in the security office, located on the first floor of Clark Hall and online at http://res.kent.edu.
