Muhammad cartoon debate comes to Kent

Julia Shearson, director of the Cleveland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, will discuss the fallout from the cartoon depicting the prophet Muhammad today at 7 p.m. in room 319 in the Student Center.

Chereen Gamal, president of the Muslim Student Association, said the presentation, titled “What would Muhammad do?” is intended to be a discussion of the many aspects of the cartoon that caused wide-spread violence after its publication.

Gamal said she plans “to comment on the Muslim perspective and discuss the reaction that occurred.

“Even though we don’t support the violent reaction we want to discuss the emotional reaction,” Gamal said.

Gamal said she invited others to discuss the cartoons and all but Shearson had other obligations. She said she encourages students and professors to attend and discuss their opinions and thoughts openly.

The event is free and open to the public.
