Flashes to compete in FirstEnergy
April 28, 2006
The Kent State men’s golf team will travel the short distance to Akron to compete in the FirstEnergy Intercollegiate tomorrow and Sunday after taking a week off of play.
Held at the Firestone Country Club, the tournament will include 54 holes and will be the first for the Flashes above the Mason-Dixon line this season.
Tomorrow morning’s first two rounds will begin at 8 a.m., while Sunday’s final 18 holes will start at 8:30 a.m.
“This will be our first tournament in Ohio since the fall,” Kent State coach Herb Page said in an online press release. Kent State did not compete in the invitational last season. Last year’s winner of the tournament was Toledo with 868, while the individual champion crown went to the Rockets’ Justin Bertsch at 6-under par.
The Flashes currently rank No. 30 in the Golfweek Performance Index Top 100.
In their last time out, the Flashes placed fourth out of 12 teams at the Aggie Invitational in Bryan, Texas Apr. 15 and 16. The three teams that finished ahead of Kent State are ranked nationally in the top 20.
“I thought that we held our own down South against some very good competition,” Page said. “We played several ranked teams and did very well.”
Next up for the Flashes is the Mid-American Conference Championships in Indianapolis, Ind., where the team looks to defend its MAC title.
