Flashes finish fourth among top 20 teams

Four members of Kent State men’s golf team finished in the top 15 at the Aggie Invitational over the weekend.
The Flashes placed fourth out of 12 teams behind three top 20 teams. In the tournament hosted by No. 12 Texas A&M, No. 16 Texas Tech came from behind in the final round Saturday to win at four over par with a total of 868. Texas A&M finished in the No. 2 spot at 5-over with an 869 total, followed by No. 2 Oklahoma State at 13 over with a total of 877.
The Flashes finished at 19 over with a total of 883, after a strong final round of 290 at 2-over par. They posted a 292 in the first round and 301 in the second.
Sophomore Tom Ballinger led the Flashes at 3-over par and a ninth-place finish. Ballinger started the tournament at 1-under in the first round, 3-over in the second and 1-over in the final round to finish at 219. Fellow sophomore Tommy Wiegand placed 11th at 6-over with a total of 222.
Senior Ryan Yip ended the tournament at 9-over, totaling 225. He tied for the No. 15 spot with junior Marc Bourgeois.
Texas A&M led the tournament for the first two rounds, entering Saturday with a 15-shot lead over Texas Tech. Led by Oscar Floren, Texas Tech went on to take the win with three golfers shooting at least 4-under. Floren shot for 7-under, totaling 209.
The No. 36 nationally ranked Flashes next compete at the FirstEnergy Intercollegiate beginning April 29 at the Firestone Country Club in Akron.
