Flashes become sole owner of the MAC title

With Akron’s 83-71 loss at Buffalo last night, the Kent State men’s basketball team came into sole possession of the Mid-American Conference Championship for the regular season.

The Flashes (22-7, 15-2 MAC) have been battling the Zips (20-8, 13-4 MAC) all season for the No. 1 spot in the MAC. After the Flashes’ 78-58 win over Ohio Tuesday, they were two games ahead of the Zips, with the title depending on last night’s loss and the Kent State-Akron match up Saturday.

The Zips now have lost three of their past four. Akron was led in scoring by sophomore Cedrick Middleton with 14 points.

The Bulls (18-11, 8-9 MAC) took the lead over the Zips in the first half, leading 39-32 at the half. In the second half, the Bulls shot for 54 percent and led by as many as 15 points.

Tuesday’s win secured the No. 1 seed for the Flashes in the upcoming MAC Championship Tournament which begins for the Flashes at 7 p.m. March 9.

The Flashes have one more regular season game to go against Akron at noon Saturday at the James A. Rhodes Arena.
