Water main breaks at the ice arena

A water main broke yesterday outside the Kent State Ice Arena on the corner of Loop Road and Eastway Drive.

The recent changes in temperature were the cause of the break, said Bob Misbrener, associate director of Campus Environment and Operations. The 6-inch-thick pipe that supplies the DeWeese Health Center broke around 5 p.m.

The pipe was expected to be fixed within four hours, Misbrener said. After the ground surrounding the break was dug up, a clamp was expected to be used to fix the pipe. The water main was also going to be shut off.

This is the second time that this particular main has broken, Misbrener said.

“It’s because the freeze-and-thaw effect happened too much,” he said. “There’s nothing you can do about it.”

There was no damage to the Ice Arena, said Joel Gabriel, recreation facility worker.
