Art majors sell their creations
November 29, 2005
A whirlwind of colored scarves, earrings, necklaces, brooches and Christmas ornaments reflected in the eyes of shoppers yesterday at the Jewelry Student Co-op Holiday Sale in the Art Building.
“I am selling my jewelry to make some money, but it is nice to actually sell my work,” said senior crafts major Roza Haidet.
The holiday sale is the first of two that will take place this school year. More than 25 art majors and local artists are selling pieces at the event.
The Jewelry and Metals Co-op of Kent works with students to organize and make a profit from the pieces. It takes 25 percent of the proceeds and the rest of the money earned goes to the artist, Haidet said.
Along with earning some extra cash, several students find the sale to be a good marketing tool. Some artists who were selling pieces had Web sites or business cards to go with their jewelry or crafts.
“This is my first year selling, and I like getting (the jewelry) out there,” said Barbie Gossen, graduate crafts student.
Viewers and buyers gathered around the jewelry, much of which was made in the metals lab in the Art Building. Bracelets and earrings have been the hottest items for buyers, Haidet and Gossen said.
The artists take cash and check only and will be operating from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at the Art Building, tomorrow at Rockwell Hall, Thursday at the Student Center and Friday at the Michael Schwartz Center.
