The American Cancer Society will be hosting its annual “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” walk this Sunday in downtown Akron.

This event is the organization’s largest fundraiser, said Monica Miller, public relations director for the America Cancer Society Northeast Region. Since the walk originated in 1993, the organization has raised more than $160 million through roughly 2.5 million people.

Registrations will begin at 9 a.m. at the Akron Aeros Stadium. The 5k walk starts at 10 a.m. and goes throughout downtown Akron.

“With the money raised through Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, we have continued to invest in the most promising breast cancer research and have been able to offer education and patient service programs all over the United States,” Miller said.

Last year, more than 400,000 volunteers collected more than $32 million.

With 4,000 to 5,000 people expected to walk on Sunday, students are encouraged to participate.

“It is a great way to show your support for loved ones that have been affected by breast cancer,” Miller said. “It is an easy three-mile walk and demonstrates your commitment to finding a cure for breast cancer.”
