Relay for Life is Saturday, and Kent State University is within reach of its goal of raising $60,000.

As of Tuesday, the American Cancer Society’s Web site showed Kent State raising roughly $47,147 in online donations.

Throughout the 24-hour event, there will be nine themed laps around the track in which each relay team will have one or more members complete the lap performing an action that is similar to the movie theme of the lap.

Participants in Saturday’s relay are encouraged to bring empty 20-ounce Coca-Cola bottles. For each bottle brought, that person will receive a raffle ticket for a drawing for a new bike.

The team that brings the most bottles will receive $250 that is donated to the relay fund.

Coca-Cola is co-sponsoring the event.

Relay for Life begins at 10 a.m. Saturday and ends at 10 a.m. Sunday. It will be held at the track behind the Liquid Crystal Institute/Materials Science Building.
