Kent State’s Africana studies department held a

Kent State’s Africana studies department held a welcome ceremony Thursday morning for the delegation of students from the University of Fort Hare, a part of the Heritage Ubuntu Student Fellowship.

Two years ago, the Heritage Ubuntu Student Fellowship was created to allow students from both Kent and the University of Fort Hare to study at each university and study various cultures, Felix Kumah-Abiwu, associate professor of Africana studies and director of the Center for African Studies, said.

The welcome ceremony started with opening remarks from Kumah-Abiwu, who quoted Nelson Mandela while welcoming the masters and doctoral students.

It’s funny how a tapestry’s pattern is determined by the moments that precede its creation. A memory or flood of feelings that catch a creator in a terrifying plethora of possibilities. The flurry still shakes me. Where I am caught can change meaning in an instant.

For the 2023-2024 school year, the university welc

For the 2023-2024 school year, the university welcomed the highest international student population prior to 2018.

This year 2,089 international students from countries such as India, Brazil and Saudi Arabia have chosen to study at the university, said Jef Davis, associate director for International Student and Scholar Services.

“We went through some declines… since the pandemic started as did most other institutions and then we started seeing a rebounding,” Davis said.

With tensions rising from the Palestine-Israel war

With tensions rising from the Palestine-Israel war, Kent State President Todd Diacon took the time to explain the university’s core values of kindness, respect and free speech in this semester’s installment of his online session, “Talking with Todd.”

This is not the first time Diacon has spoken about these core values as earlier in the semester he spoke to the freshmen about them during his convocation speech.

“I urged these new students to embrace our identity, to embrace this commitment and to learn how to agree and to learn how to disagree, and to do so in a respectful and kind manner,” Diacon said.

After starting the season with five consecutive road games, the Kent State women’s basketball team played in front of a home crowd Wednesday.

The Flashes (4-2) defeated Coppin State (3-5) 77-40.

“It’s been quite the last nine or ten days with a lot of traveling,” coach Todd Starkey said. “It kind of showed in the first quarter when we got off to a slow start and struggled to find our rhythm.’

I fell in love with writing my first semester at Kent State in 2022, and to my surprise, my talent took over like wildfire. Throughout my short life thus far, my possession of “talent” has been missing; I’ve lacked aspiration and a role model to show me the joys of a skillful hobby.

Despite my misdirection, I’ve found myself consumed in love with words and writing when nothing of substance had the power to consume me prior.

Turning an internship into a full-time job is achievable, according to Public Relations Internship Coordinator Stefanie Moore, but professionals have tips and tricks that will help the process of turning from an intern into a full-time employee.

As an intern, there are opportunities to be immersed in the company culture, learn from seasoned professionals and gain insights into what full-time work could look like, said Moore. Standing out can help an intern reach that goal of being a full-time employee.

The Israel Defense Forces said Wednesday it was assessing a Hamas claim that the youngest Israeli hostage, 10-month-old Kfir Bibas, his brother and his mother are dead.

The armed wing of Hamas said earlier Wednesday, without providing evidence, that Kfir, his 4-year-old brother, Ariel, and their mother, Shiri, were killed in an Israeli airstrike. The armed wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, said they had been killed in earlier Israeli bombing.

The IDF responded with a statement saying they were “assessing the accuracy of the information.” It said they had spoken to the relatives of the Bibas family and “are with them at this difficult time.”

The university’s East Liverpool campus closed Wednesday after a man broke into its Main Building around 6:30 a.m. that morning.

Thirty-four-year-old David Gamble is charged with breaking and entering the building at 400 E. 4th St. in East Liverpool, along with theft and criminal damage, according to East Liverpool Police Officer Jay Lane.

According to the department, the man does not have any connection to the university.

As of Tuesday morning, Kent police are still searching for Dawan R. Wilson, who has been charged with the aggravated murder of a 35-year-old woman at a duplex off South Water Street in Kent.

A Kent Police Department report said the homicide occurred around 2 p.m. Nov. 21 at 1323 S. Water St. Kent Police Lieutenant Michael Lewis told the Record-Courier the victim was pregnant and more charges could be filed.

A warrant is out for Wilson’s arrest. The suspect is 44 years old and from Goodyear, Arizona.
