        Melodic music filled the streets of downtown Kent Melodic music filled the streets of downtown Kent Saturday night as a part of Phil Kline’s “Unsilent Night,” an outdoor musical performance created by attendees. 

Approximately 250 people gathered in the Hometown Bank Plaza with their phones and speakers to celebrate the holidays with the help of music from Phil Kline, who grew up in Stow and now is a composer in New York City. 

Phil Kline’s “Unsilent Night” is a musical piece broken up into four different tracks. Each individual attending the event downloaded one of the four tracks at the start of the event, in which everyone simultaneously hit play creating a musical sound.

        As the week of final exams approaches, beginning M As the week of final exams approaches, beginning Monday, Dec. 11, students all across campus are getting prepared for their various tests and projects.

Jackson Hargett, a sophomore political science major, said his finals were causing him some stress.

“I’m pretty stressed,” Hargett said. “I’ve got a lot to do.”

        Graduate student forward Chris Payton Jr. scored 1 Graduate student forward Chris Payton Jr. scored 18 points and snagged a career-high 20 rebounds to lead Kent State men’s basketball to an 83-77 win over Cleveland State on Saturday. 

“Before every game during the national anthem, I’ll close my eyes and think about two or three things I have to do,” Payton said. “Today, one of those things was rebounding.”

The Flashes improved to 7-3, while the Vikings dropped to 6-5.

        As the semester comes to an end, students will soo As the semester comes to an end, students will soon head home to partake in holiday festivities with friends and family, with many people sharing unique traditions that make celebrating the holidays special and memorable with loved ones. 

Megan Oberuch, a sophomore nursing major, said she kicks off the holiday season with one of her favorite traditions during Thanksgiving break.

“Watching ‘The Muppet Christmas Carol’ on Thanksgiving is one big holiday tradition,” Oberuch said. “It was my grandma’s favorite Christmas movie – she would always put it on, and now we do it every year.”

        After graduating from Kent State in 2014, husband After graduating from Kent State in 2014, husband and wife duo Coty Giannelli and Hayley Bennett decided to bring their love for board games to downtown with a new business.

Giannelli and Bennett are the proprietors of an upcoming board game lounge, Board and Bevy. The pair expects to open the spot in the spring of 2024. 

“I always wanted to own a business and work for myself, and Coty always had a passion for board games,” Bennett said. “We wanted to fulfill both those dreams.”

        Every Wednesday and Friday night, line dancers and Every Wednesday and Friday night, line dancers and country-music lovers crowd into The Dusty Armadillo, a local bar located in Rootstown, about 15 minutes from Kent.

On the dance floor, experienced line dancers step in perfect time to country music, flaunting cowboy hats, boots and their best country garb.

Newcomers watch from the side of the dance floor, trying to pick up dance steps or just admiring the experienced dancers while “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” and “House Party” blasts throughout the bar.

        Oh, how I just love the relaxing sights of the hol Oh, how I just love the relaxing sights of the holidays: the decorations, the delicious food hitting your plate, the kids playing with each other, the drunk aunt having her ninth glass of wine.

Oh, and how I adore the beautiful sounds — the music, the kids laughing and the polite chatter of everyone in the house:

        With finals quickly approaching, the stress from t With finals quickly approaching, the stress from them can be tempting for students to turn to artificial intelligence to help with assignments. 

This semester, instructors discussed the use of AI in their classroom through their syllabi by highlighting both the beneficiary factors along with potential ethical risks of it. 

Matthew J. Craig, a Ph.D. candidate in the College of Communication and Information, is a Human-Machine Communication researcher. In other words, Craig researches and studies the way humans interact with and through machines.

        The holidays are the perfect time for students to The holidays are the perfect time for students to increase their sense of style and add staples to their holiday wish list, at least according to senior fashion design student Nicole Farmer.

“I really think that Christmas, fashion-wise, is about building your staple wardrobe because you’re gonna get a lot of wear out of things that are going to follow you through the seasons, no matter what trends are popping up,” she said. 

The first item Farmer said students should add to their list is a black shoulder bag, specifically Coach’s Swinger 20.

        All semester long, translation students worked on All semester long, translation students worked on their “Translation Station” event. The goal was to share the beauty of translation and how language can serve as a bridge between different societies.

Throughout the semester they worked to translate an entire children’s book, “My Friend Federico,” that was published in Spain.

The students hosted the “Translation Station” event to present their work at the Kent Free Library on Friday. Along with reading the book, the students had interactive activities such as charades, and graphic telephone meant to express the work of translation.
