The Kent State women’s basketball team fell to the University of Notre Dame in the first round of the NCAA tournament Saturday, losing 81-68.

Redshirt senior guard Katie Shumate led the Flashes in scoring with 20 points, shooting 7-for-17 from the field and 2-for-6 from the free-throw line.

Freshman forward Janae Tyler finished with 18 points, shooting 8-for-11 from the field.

The Kent State women’s basketball team enters th

The Kent State women’s basketball team enters the NCAA Tournament as the No. 15 seed and will take on the No. 2 seed University of Notre Dame in the first round, tipping off at 2:15 p.m. in Purcell Pavilion.

The Flashes, led by redshirt senior guard Katie Shumate and junior forwards Jenna Batsch and Bridget Dunn, defeated Buffalo 78-60 in the Mid-American Conference championship to punch their ticket to the NCAA tournament.

The win was the first conference championship for coach Todd Starkey, as the Flashes earned a spot in March Madness for the first time since 2002.

Sixty percent of college students have experienced

Sixty percent of college students have experienced burnout, according to a study done by the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

The APA Dictionary of Psychology defines burnout as “Physical, emotional, or mental exhaustion accompanied by decreased motivation, lowered performance, and negative attitudes toward oneself and others.”

“I’ve dealt with burnout a lot my senior year,” Kylee Johnson, a senior public health major, said. “I just don’t feel like doing my work.”

Earlier this month, the Kent City Council voted on

Earlier this month, the Kent City Council voted on a proposed extension to the hike and bike trail that will cover areas ranging from Longcoy Elementary to Roosevelt High School. The vote was unanimous, officially giving the green light for the project.

City engineer Jim Bowling said the current hike and bike trail has had a big impact on the community.

“The trails improve the quality of life of residents, but it’s also the idea of walkability and bikeability that creates a more sustainable community,” he said.

Fifteen months after it was announced that the College Football Playoff will expand to 12 teams in 2024, the NCAA is nearing an agreement it will expand once again to 14 teams.

The NCAA, CFP board and conference commissioners couldn’t even wait to play the first 12-team playoff before deciding to expand again, just to stuff their pockets a little more.

From 1869, when the first college football game was played, through the 1997 season, there were no playoffs and no national championship games. The teams played out their seasons, and whoever was deemed to be the best team at the end of the season was crowned the national champion.

Title IX was created in 1972, and it protects people from discrimination based on sex in education programs and activities.

Title IX requires that every educational institution have a Title IX Compliance Coordinator. Although Title IX has been around for 50 years, many students are still unaware of it.

Every syllabus for classes at the university has a section that discloses the information about Title IX. The university also takes discrimination and harassment seriously.

The Kent State University Casino Management class, taught by Rob Heiman and Carl LoPresti, went on a field trip to Las Vegas from March 3 to March 7! Heiman and LoPresti take their classes on this trip every year and are very grateful to have a multitude of contacts out in Las Vegas who open their doors and are incredibly hospitable to their classes.

The class toured multiple establishments including the Bellagio, Caesar’s Palace, Luxor, the Wynn, the Palms, and Allegiant Stadium. The students were able to learn more about the casino industry, meet the professionals working at the casinos and grow their networks, and got behind-the-scenes tours and information!

The students learned about how each casino works and had a blast exploring the city that never sleeps in their down time which included seeing “Cirque du Soleil: Beatles Love.” The class was also able to connect with Kent State Hospitality Program alum Taylor Goodyear, who has her own company, Social Exchange Group, located in Las Vegas. Her company worked with Rob & Carl in planning an alumni event at their studio and scheduled a group dinner for the class at Flight Club.

On May 4, 1970, four Kent State students lost their lives and nine were injured after being shot by the Ohio National Guard during a protest against the Vietnam War.

May 4 awareness, rooted in and established by decades of student activism, now stands as a flourishing and dynamic legacy that is celebrated and honored in the present day.

“There might not be a May 4 commemoration or the ongoing 50 years plus of May 4 education without students at Kent State,” Roseann “Chic” Canfora, a journalism professor and eyewitness to the shootings, said.

Cartoonist and illustrator Chuck Ayers reflected on his experiences while being on campus during the events of May 4, 1970, and how his cartoons allowed him to reflect on those events during the opening of a new exhibit in the May 4 Visitors Center.

In celebration of the opening of the exhibit, “Graphic Content: Cartoons of May 4,” an exhibit displaying Ayers and fellow artists Derf Backderf and Katherine Wirick’s May 4 centered artworks, the May 4 Visitors Center invited Ayers to speak during the Opening Dialogue.

During his time at the university, Ayers said his graphic design major prompted him to be near Taylor Hall on May 4 as he wanted to take a few pictures for his photojournalism course.

Most young women are familiar with the “clean gi

Most young women are familiar with the “clean girl” aesthetic: slicked-back hair, minimal makeup, dewy skin and simple clothing. It’s just one among various aesthetics, including grunge, cottage-core or even mob wife.

In actuality, most women do not fully embody their aesthetic. Those who love the “clean girl” aesthetic do not have perpetually dewy skin or lead minimalist lives. It’s an image disconnected from reality.

Categorizing women is not new; unsurprisingly, it’s deeply rooted in misogyny. In many forms of media, each female character has one defining characteristic that rarely overlaps with other women in the same story.
