Undergraduate Student Government (USG)  prepares to welcome Mariah the Scientist to campus for their upcoming annual fall concert on Saturday Sept. 23. 

Organizing USG’s semesterly concerts is a several-months long process. Director of Programming Brian Johnson said he has been working on putting the concert together since June.

Alongside Johnson, all current USG members, as well as advisors, are assisting with getting the concert ready. 

Johnson also had several transitional meetings with the previous director of programming of USG in order to prepare him for putting events together like the concert.

“All of USG is helping in some capacity,” he said. “Either helping tabling to promote it, helping create marketing plans, sitting in on meetings to discuss future plans for the concert. I would definitely say all of USG is helping.”

Johnson said that one of the reasons he chose Mariah the Scientist this year was because he has not seen a female headlining act at any of the on-campus concerts since he has been attending Kent State.

“Post-pandemic, so after 2021, I have yet to see a female headliner here. I saw female openings, but I’ve never seen a female headliner,” he said.

USG has been hard at work marketing the concert. Johnson said that this semester, the organization has been focusing on social media marketing since that is what students tend to focus on.

Although the tickets are not sold out yet, USG is expecting a good turnout at the concert.

“There’s a lot of people that are interested in attending the concert,” he said. “Which I’m not going to say shocked me, but it was more people than I expected to be interested.” 

A feature that Johnson wanted to make sure he implemented this year was affordable ticket prices in order to make the concert more accessible to students. 

The tickets are currently being sold for $20.

“Our number one goal is to make sure our student body is heard, cared for and represented,” he said.
